LEXINGTON, N.C. (AP/WATE) — The wife of an Irish businessman and her father have been sentenced to between 20 and 25 years in prison for in her husband’s death.
A North Carolina jury on Wednesday found 33-year-old Molly Corbett and her father, 67-year-old James Martens, guilty of second-degree murder in a court in Lexington.
Martens at one time worked at the Department of Energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Thirty-nine-year-old Jason Corbett was found beaten to death in their home in a golf course community in Davidson County, North Carolina, in 2015.
Defense attorneys said the woman and her father acted in self-defense during a struggle with her husband.
Jason Corbett, a native of Ireland, met Molly Corbett in 2008 when she worked as an au pair for the two children from his first marriage.
Prosecutors said Molly Corbett may have wanted to adopt the children and collect on a life insurance policy.
