Screening of ‘Hidden Figures’ at Knox County school promotes STEM careers

OAK RIDGE (WATE) – Vine Middle School students got the opportunity to watch a film promoting careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) received licensed rights for a special one-time educational showing of “Hidden Figures,” the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated movie illustrating the important role of three female African-American mathematicians who worked behind the scenes at NASA. said they took away an important lesson from the screening.

Anthony Toms, a student at Vine Middle School, said he took away an important lesson from the screening. “Even though society can be in your way, you can always do want you want to do,” said Toms.

After the movie, a group that included scientists and researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory shared their personal backgrounds and experiences of those who inspired them to pursue their careers.
