5 East Tennessee teams to play in 2016 BlueCross Bowl finals

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Five out of seven teams will be from East Tennessee during the 2016 BlueCross Bowl finals.

Greenback won 42-27 over South Pittsburg to play Dresden in the 1A state football playoffs. Greenback lost in 2015 to Nashville Christian. The last time they won the finals was in 1987. Greenback will kick-off against Dresden at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 2. It is the first time the two teams will face-off.

Alcoa will play Liberty Magnet in the 3A state football playoffs. The tornadoes decimated Sequatchie County 24-0. They kick-off at 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 2. Alcoa is 100-14 in the playoffs and 14-2 in the finals.

Highlights: State football playoff semifinals

For the first time since 1999, Knoxville Central advances to the 4A state football play-offs. Central won 31-24 over Marshall County. The Bobcats will kick-off against Memphis East at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3. Central lost to Memphis East in 1999, so if they can win, they will get redemption.

Farragut High School will advance to the 5A state football finals for the first time ever. The Admirals won over South-Doyle 45-14. They will play Independence Friday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Knoxville Webb won last week against St. George 69-48. They will play Lausanne Thursday, December 1 at 3:00 p.m. in the Division II Class A finals. It will be the first ever meeting between the two teams and Webb’s fourth straight year in the finals.

Austin-East and Maryville did not move on in the play-offs this week. Austin-East lost 35-21 against Marion County. Losing their 12-game winning streak, Maryville lost 23-7 against Oakland.

Maryville has 14 all-time titles and Alcoa has 14. If Alcoa wins, which is likely, they may tie with Maryville.
