Forestry officials optimistic after rain

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The wildfire in Walland continued to grow overnight to 900 acres, coming within yards of homeowners, Friday night.

The Red Cross of East Tennessee travelling to Blount County to offer support. Executive Director of Red Cross of East Tennessee says they were just trying help the community.

“While no mandatory evacuation was made, the fire was close enough to frighten a lot of people, so we opened an evacuation shelter,” said Hankes.

Saturday mornings rain showers helped the firefighters tremendously.

“The little rain that we got, we’re very encouraged that it helped us,” said Blount County Fire Chief Doug McClanahan.

Fire crews are working around the clock to keep people in the Walland community safe.
