KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Every year the Tennessee Volunteers compete against the Kentucky Wildcats at Neyland Stadium to see who can donate the most blood to their local blood center.

This year the competition begins November 14, the same day MEDIC Regional Blood Center said they will begin testing all donation for Zika. This the 29th year fans of the Vols and Cats have compted to see who can donate the most blood.

For the past several years, The Vols fans lost to Kentucky, but this year MEDIC Regional Blood Center said they hope fans can turn the competition around. This year, the blood center is offering a t-shirt, coupon for a free pizza from Papa John’s, free Chick-fil-a sandiwch, free Wendy’s Frosty, free appetizer from Texas Roadhouse and free admission to Fantasy of trees for all donors.

Since February, U.S. blood centers have been turning away people who have recently traveled to areas with Zika outbreaks, under a previous FDA directive. In August the FDA expanded their screening, asking all blood donation centers to start screening for Zika, a major expansion intended to protect the nation’s blood supply from the mosquito-borne virus.
