KNOXVILLE (WATE) – As results came in Tuesday night, Knox County election numbers showed an extremely tight race in Tennessee State House District 13.
Republican incumbent Rep. Eddie Smith declared victory in the race as the final tally showed him in the lead 11,160 to 11,006 over Democrat Gloria Johnson. It was a tight race all night long. As numbers came in, both Johnson and incumbent Smith were both in the lead at times.
Johnson says she is waiting to make sure every ballot is counted and is not conceding the race yet.
In the final hours of the race, both candidates spent the day visiting polling locations throughout the district. The two haven’t agreed on much throughout this race, but both campaigns focused on voters as they entered the polls.
At South Doyle High School’s polling location, Smith said, “It’s a great day because you see everybody coming out and exercising their right to vote.”
Johnson spent time at the Larry Cox Senior Recreational Center, speaking with voters on their way into the poll.
“We’re still knocking on doors and making phone calls, getting people to the polls,” Johnson said.
The pair spent the time waiting for election results with their respective parties – the Republicans at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the Democrats at the Southern Depot.
