KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The next viral video dance craze is here.
From the Harlem Shake to the Dougie, dance crazes have become popular thanks to Twitter, YouTube and until recently Vine. While many dance crazes pair people dancing to music, the #MannequinChallenge became famous for people doing nothing whatsoever.
Well not quite. The goal is to try and stand as perfectly still as possible to create the perfect snapshot of the atmosphere of a place at any given time.
College GameDay did it most recently at Rupp Arena during a Kentucky basketball exhibition game.
The #MannequinChallenge surfaced on Twitter in late October. It’s believed to have been created by high school students at the Edward H. White High School in Jacksonville, Florida.
After that, many others have piled on with increasingly more difficult poses. The music heard playing in the background of most clips is Rae Sremmurd’s Black Beatles featuring Gucci Mane.
As of Monday, a search for #MannequinChallenge comes up with over 57,000 results that feature not just students, but everyone from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Milwaukee Bucks creating their own variations. The Bucks even filmed their challenge on a plane.
