Child hit, killed after getting off school bus in Roane County

OLIVER SPRINGS (WATE) – A child was hit and killed by a motorcycle Friday afternoon after he was got off the school bus, according to law enforcement.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says the bus was going north around 3:50 p.m. on Old Harriman Highway near Scandlyn Hollow Road when Jacob Patterson, 12, got out of the bus on the west side of the road. Two buses and a motorcycle operated by a 16-year-old boy were stopped in the southbound lane.

After the two buses passed, troopers say Jacob ran across the road to check the mail and was hit by the motorcycle. Jacob was pronounced dead on the scene.

The 16-year-old was also injured and was taken to the hospital. His identity has not been released due to his age. It is not yet known if he will be cited or charged.

A witness who does not want to be identified told WATE 6 On Your Side she saw Patterson before first responders got there.

“It’s your worst nightmare to see a little kid that has been in a tragedy,” she said.

She said she was driving up Old Harriman Highway when a man in a vehicle in front of her stopped and asked for help. Patterson was on the side of the road. She went to him and could not find a pulse. She said first responders got there ten minutes after her.

“I still have it in my head about him,” she said.

She said the accident happened right in front of Patterson’s home. She said family saw him shortly after the accident.

“First she was like, ‘Is he okay? He is not dead is he?'” she said.

She said when the family heard the terrible news, one family member started to scream and couldn’t stop crying. She said she tried to comfort the family.

“Nothing you can do at a time like that that is going to make any of it any easier,” she said
