18 Knoxville area high school players nominated for Mr. Football award

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Eighteen different high school football players from Knoxville and the surrounding area are nominated for the 2016 Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards.

The 68 semifinalists include four each of the state’s eight football classifications for both Back of the Year and Lineman of the Year, in addition to four for Kicker of the Year. Two finalists for each category will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m., while the 32nd annual Mr. Football Awards presentation will be held Monday, Nov. 28 at Nissan Stadium.

Farragut High School punter Joe Doyle is a contender for Kicker of the year. According to Inside Tennessee, he’s interested in both Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Three players are nominated from Knoxville Catholic Highschool. Chase Kuerschen and Amari Rodgers are both nominated for Class 4A Back. Cade Mays is nominated for Class 4A Lineman. Mays, following in his dad’s footsteps, committed to play for Tennessee.

Oak Ridge High School’s wide receiver Tee Higgins, who switched from a University of Tennessee commit to Clemson in July is up for Class 5A Back against Knoxville Halls High School’s Caden Harbin. Harbin just returned to playing after an injury in week 7.

Eighth grader Elijah Howard from Webb School of Knoxville is also up for Division II Class A Bac. Tennessee coach Butch Jones offered a full scholarship to Howard in July.
