KNOXVILLE (WATE) – As we all enjoy our favorite pumpkin-flavored treats, some lucky animals at Zoo Knoxville also got a treat on Thursday.
A farmer from Oneida brought giant pumpkins for the zoo’s three elephants, allowing them to chow down on 1,500 pounds of pumpkin. Zoo leaders say this is part of their enrichment program, encouraging the animals to use their natural instincts.
“They looked at it. Obviously they ran right to it. They’re real cognizant of their environment so they knew there was something different there and ran right to it and did exactly what we hoped they would do,” said Director of Animals Phil Colclough.
The zoo is considering making this an annual fall tradition, with other animals maybe getting in on the fun in future years.
