KNOXVILLE (WATE) – An East Knoxville church is in need of repairs after a pickup truck crashed into the building.
The church’s pastor shared a photo of the damage with WATE 6 On Your Side showing a big hole in the corner of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
A big, blue tarp now covers the hole. Pastor William Riddle says the accident happened around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. When he arrived, firefighters were cutting a victim out of the truck. The pastor says two people were taken to the hospital.
He also says the church has received an outpouring of support and prayers from the community.
“Pray for our little old church. We don’t have many members, but we are strong in our faith,” said Rev. Riddle. “We just don’t stay inside the four walls. We stay outside the four walls and this won’t stop us. And this won’t hold us back from serving the Lord and our community.”
He says the impact made a crack alongside the building and buckled some of the floors. Riddle says a structural engineer will assess the damage to make sure it is safe, but for now to keep praying.
