NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A day after Jalen Hurd announced his decision to transfer from the University of Tennessee football team, his stepfather Arthur Smotherman spoke to WKRN about some of the rumors surrounding his stepson.
Smotherman says Hurd wanted to leave the program following last season, and the decision to transfer with four games left comes with some regret that he didn’t leave sooner.
He says the decision was based on unfulfilled promises that Hurd would see more of the same offensive formations he saw last year during the Outback Bowl. Smotherman told WKRN Hurd has not seen the same offense this season.
He also says Hurd was worried about his future. According to Smotherman, Hurd injured his back during the South Carolina game after already suffering a concussion against Georgia and did not want to risk the possibility of a season ending injury preventing him from transferring.
Smotherman noted that Hurd has been granted his full release but not to another SEC school.
He also says the family still has a great relationship with the coaching staff at Tennessee.
