Newport man sentenced to 15 years for approaching deputies with guns in pockets

GREENEVILLE (WATE) – A Newport man was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison Thursday after prosecutors said he approached deputies on the courthouse lawn with three loaded guns in his pockets.

Freddie Coufax Swaggerty, 52, was sentenced to 188 months in prison on two counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He will also be on probation for five years and have to pay a $100 fine.

The charges were part of an investigation conducted by the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office.
