Man charged with vehicular homicide in LaFollette crash

LAFOLLETTE (WATE) – A Rocky Top man faces several charges after a single vehicle crash in LaFollette that killed one of his passengers.

A LaFollette Police Department report says a 1998 Pontiac driven by Michael Chesney, 27, was going westbound on Jacksboro Pike near Krome Salon when witnesses said the car veered of the roadway to the right and hit a metal utility pole. The car then spun around and came to a rest over an embankment.

The front passenger, Kristian Leach, 21, was trapped and had to be cut from the vehicle by firefighters. Leach was taken to Tennova’s emergency room and then flown to UT Medical Center where she died from her injuries.

A rear passenger, Samuel Welch, 20, was not hurt. Chesney was also uninjured and refused medical treatment. He was arrested and charged with DUI and later vehicular homicide.
