Knoxville’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure celebrates 20 years

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will be held in Knoxville this weekend.

There is still time to register for Saturday’s event at World’s Fair Park. Over 8,000 people are expected to participate in the 5K.

“This special anniversary is a time to reflect back and celebrate all that we’ve accomplished in giving $7 million back to the local community,” said Amy Dunaway, executive director of the Knoxville affiliate. “We will also remember those we’ve lost, and resolve to work even harder during the next 20 years.”

The event raises money for breast cancer research. Donations will be accepted until November 21. Breast cancer survivors will wear pink shirts on race day.

“It’s very emotional, especially for those participating for the first time,” Dunaway said. “You can see the excitement and raw emotion on their faces.”

At the event, there will be a Jazzercise class, a moment of silence, recognitions and more.

Adults can pay $35 to register or $40 for timed runs. The fees for children are $25 and $30 for timed races. Registration can be done at the event from 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. The race starts at 8:30 a.m.
