Man dies after being shot in head at off-campus TSU dorm

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A 19-year-old man who was shot in the head early Friday morning at a Tennessee State University dorm has died.

According to Metro police, Jhonquis Compton passed away at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Wednesday.

Compton was shot just after 1 a.m. in front of the Jenkins Dorm on Heiman Street near 23rd Avenue North. Jenkins is on property owned by the House of God Church, but is leased by the university as additional dorm space. It is not on the school’s campus.

Police said Compton was reportedly shot by a black man who had gold twists in his hair. The gunman fled in a dark Pontiac sedan.

Police previously said illegal drug sales may have been involved in the shooting.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward.

According to Metro police, Compton was also wounded in a shooting at 14th Avenue North and Buchanan Street on Aug. 19. There is no immediate indication that incident is directly connected to the overnight shooting.
