KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Knoxville Police Department says a man was taken to the hospital Wednesday evening after what was originally reported to be a shooting in a parking lot near Knoxville Center Mall. Police say they found no evidence of a shooting and they now believe it actually happened in Knox County.

Officers were called to Sam’s Club, 2920 Knoxville Center Drive, for a report of a shooting in the parking lot. Officers found Hugo Miguel with a gunshot wound to his back. He told officers he was walking to his vehicle after leaving Gold’s Gym when he was shot. He did not know the identity of the shooter.

Miguel told investigators that he drove to another parking lot and called his wife. His wife reported the shooting.

He was taken to UT Medical Center by Rural/Metro for non-life threatening injuries.

Knoxville Police Department says a crime scene was never located, no reports of gunfire were reported to 911 and there were no witnesses to the alleged shooting. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is taking over the investigation.
