Wreaths Across America – how to honor a Knox County veteran’s grave this holiday season

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The community is coming together to honor fallen veterans.

WATE 6 On Your Side is proud to support Wreaths Across America.  You can take part in this national movement by purchasing a wreath that will adorn the grave of a fallen soldier in our community.

“If you simply sponsor one wreath or choose to sponsor 100, you are honoring veterans and families who have honored our community with their service,” said Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, who has a team to raise money for Wreaths Across America. “Whether the men and women buried in our veteran cemeteries were lost during combat or after living a long life, we do this for the family members who are still living.”

Mayor Burchett has raised money for Wreaths Across America for several years. Last year his team raised over $30,000 to provide wreaths for veterans’ graves in Knox County.

Fifteen dollars will fund a live wreath to be placed on a grave. The organization will donate a wreath for every two wreaths that are sponsored.

Wreaths will be placed on graves December 17. There are more than 15,000 buried at the three veteran cemeteries in Knox County: Old East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, New East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery and Knoxville National Cemetery.

To sponsor a wreath, visit KnoxCounty.org and click on the “Wreaths Across America” banner. The deadline for online donations is November 28. The deadline for donations by check is November 21. Checks should be made payable to “Wreaths Across America” and be mailed to 400 Main Street, Suite 615, Knoxville, TN 37902.
