East Tennessee school offers unexploded ordnance training program

FRIENDSVILLE (WATE) – Two people die everyday from unexploded weapons left over from war, according to Peak Technical Institute. The school has a special training program in East Tennessee for people who will make it their job to save lives by disabling explosives.

Peak Technical Institute’s Unexploded Ordnance Program, or UXO, provides hands-on training in real life scenarios for its students. The program only recently became available to students in Knoxville. The UXO course was developed with guidelines from the Department of Defense. Students undergo a four week program learning safety, how to handle explosives and more.

Peak’s UXO program headquarters were relocated to Maryville this summer with the classroom and range training taking place in Friendsville. Students come from all over the United States, Switzerland, Puerto Rico, Canada and Guam.
