KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Knoxville City Council passed a 16-year contract Tuesday night to collect the new garbage carts you’ll be seeing in a few months.
The plan is to help clean up the city with the new 95-gallon carts. It will be an automated system with an arm on the garbage truck except in alleys, which will still utilize a rear-loader type system.
Currently, homeowners are allowed up to four 32-gallon cans. The idea is the larger container could save up to $2 million per year, paying off the cost of the cans in only 18 to 24 months.
The new system will start in January.
