2 dead after stolen motorcycle crashes into tractor trailer in West Knoxville

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Two people are dead after Knoxville Police Department said a motorcycle stolen from a business crashed into tractor trailer on Interstate 40.

The crash was reported at around 3:37 a.m. Monday between the West Hills and Gallahar View Road exits. Crash reconstruction investigators determined that a 2016 Yamaha R1 motorcycle was traveling west on Interstate-40 at a high rate of speed and struck the rear of a semi that was also traveling west on Interstate-40.

The driver of the stolen motorcycle, Tashanti U. Underwood, 22, of Harriman and the passenger of the motorcycle, Esean A. Phillips, 27, of Knoxville were pronounced dead on the scene. Officers said neither Underwood or Phillips were wearing helmets. The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured.

Police said the investigation has revealed that the motorcycle had been stolen moments before the crash during a burglary of a Knoxville business. No charges are expected as a result of the crash.
