KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Knoxville Police Department is investigating after a man’s body was found in a parked car on Fairfax Avenue near Forsythe Street.
Police identified the victim as Benjamin Collins Jernigan, 28. Officers found his body after responding to a call about a car stopped in the roadway near railroad tracks. They believe Jernigan was shot between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday.
William Roberts lives just a few houses down from the tracks and and saw police activity over the weekend.
“Officer came down and wanted to know if we heard anything last night, and he took a report here, but we didn’t hear anything,” said Roberts.
He has lived on Fairfax Avenue for 29 years.
“It’s getting scary now because we’ve never had any trouble in this neighborhood,” he said. “Very little. We’ve had a few break-ins but that’s it.”
Jernigan’s Facebook page lists him as an employee of Archer’s BBQ. Owner Archer Bagley said Jernigan worked at the downtown location for the last two or three weeks and was longtime friends with many of the employees. He said it was an unfortunate situation that is not supposed to happen in Knoxville. He said Jernigan was a great, energetic and friendly young man who will be sorely missed by many.
