NEWPORT (WATE) – The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office has ordered an autopsy after an inmate died Wednesday.
The Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes said a corrections officer was checking the blood sugar for Amanda Hill, 32, at around 11:15 p.m. when she collapsed. Sheriff Fontes said the corrections officer immediately called for assistance and 911 was called.
Officers tried to revive Hill with CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator. Sheriff Fontes said his office is conducting an investigation into the cause of death and an autopsy has been ordered. He said he expects a finalized medical report in three to four months.
“I commend the jail staff for doing all they could in handling the emergency situation,” said Fontes. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hill family. We ask for the community to remember in prayer this family as well as our corrections officers who are affected by Hill’s death.”
Sheriff Fontes said Hill had only been in jail for 48 hours. He said she was in jail for violation of probation.
