PARROTSVILLE (WATE) – Cocke County Sheriff Armondo Fontes says a suspect wanted in connection with a Cocke County man’s death is now in custody after turning himself in.

Travis Rines, 29, was wanted for questioning in the death of Eugene Ottinger, 48. Investigators said they believe Rines and Ottinger got into a fight at a home on Merry Way.

Based on the initial investigation both individuals had apparently been drinking before the fight. Dispatch said they received a call at 11:07 p.m. from the person who reported the incident. Rines and Ottinger have a lengthy criminal history.

Rines fled the scene in a vehicle and remained on the run until turning himself in Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Fontes says Rines spoke with his probation officer, who convinced him to surrender. Rines was cooperative and told officers he was assaulted by Ottinger and was defending himself.

Rines has been charged with second degree murder and also a violation of probation. He is being held without bond.
