East Tennessee’s long, hot summer didn’t break records

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Fall officially arrives Thursday morning, but it’s definitely been a long, hot summer.

The interesting thing is that it has not been a record breaking summer. No record high temperatures have been broken and the most 90 degree days streak has not been broken.

We’ve had 71 days so far this year of 90 degree temperatures or better and that ranks sixth all-time in East Tennessee. Just one more day and we’ll move up to fifth place which is 72 back in 1931. Seventy-three days is fourth place in 1925. Third place is 76 days in 1954; 77 days in 2010 is second place back in 2010 which wasn’t that long ago. Seventy-eight days is the record set back in 1936.

Put this into perspective, Chattanooga hit their 96th day Tuesday of 90 degree heat or better and that is a record for them.
