BRISTOL, TN (WJHL)- It was a historic Saturday for the ETSU football team. The Bucs defeated Western Carolina at Bristol Motor Speedway 34-31 in front of a new school record 13,863 fans.
“This is a thing you grew up and dream about as a kid and this place is spectacular,” said ETSU quarterback Austin Herink. “When I walked in here I was like ‘whoa, this feels like we’re in the NFL or something, It’s crazy nice.’ I’ve watched a race here when I was like 5 years old and driving back up here Thursday when we came I was like, ‘wow, this is a big place.”
ETSU moved to 2-0 with the win, the first time they’ve started 2-0 since 1999. It was also the first conference game the Bucs had played in since being re-instated. The first conference win and record crowd was made even more enjoyable by playing in such a unique location.
“I was honestly thinking how are the fans going to see,” said ETSU receiver Vincent Lowe. “That’s what I was thinking to be honest. But it turned out well. Bristol Motor Speedway did a great job with the way they set everything up, so it turned out to be great. But that’s honestly what I was thinking about. Football is football at the end of the day. No matter where you play it. I was just worried if my mom and dad was going to be able see us.”
