4 dead, 42 injured as bus carrying football players crashes on NC highway

ROCKINGHAM, NC (WNCT) – Four people died in a crash on I-74 near Rockingham, NC involving a charter bus.

Troopers said the Ramah Juco Academy football team was on board the bus. They were on their way to a game against University of God’s Chosen in Raeford, NC.

The bus reportedly struck an overpass bridge near mile marker 316 in Richmond County. US-74 was closed because of the wreck.

NC Highway Patrol said 42 people were hurt in the wreck and all of them were taken to four area hospitals. The extent of their injuries range from critical to minor.

Three of the injured people had to be flown to other hospitals for treatment. One person on the bus was not injured.

Parents of some of the players were following the bus to the game, saw the crash, and pulled over to help the injured.

Troopers believe a blown out front tire caused the bus to hit the guardrail in the median.
