KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Spokesperson for Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, Dean Flener, says as long as consumers continue with normal gas usage, then Tennessee won’t have a shortage.
“We want to reassure consumers that there is availability of fuel in Tennessee,” said Flener.
Flener also mentioned a shortage may be specific to certain stations.
“We may be seeing some local outages at gas stations, but it seems the other reports we are getting is that if a station runs out, it’s not too long until that station has a supply again and that other gas stations around there may still have supply,” Flener said.
One driver said he went to five gas stations in the Knoxville area before he found one that offered regular gas.
“This is the only place I have gone to so far that has regular gas,” said Marcus Jones.
A Weigel’s on Kingston Pike bagged up its regular gas pumps earlier Saturday. Later in the night, it had regular gas. WATE 6 On Your Side called several other Weigel locations on Saturday night and three did not have regular gas.
“A lot of times if stations are out of fuel, a couple of hours later they are able to see trucks roll into those stations,” said Flener.
Flener said Governor Haslam issued an executive order Friday to help combat the possibility of shortages. It will be in place for 30 days. However, if things return to normal, Governor Haslam can take it out at any time.
“The governor issued an executive order yesterday waiving the hours of service for fuel transporters, so they have longer hours in a day to make sure fuel gets to gas pumps, retailers and convenience stores,” said Flener.
Flener said supply impacted by the Colonial Pipeline will be made up for by truck drivers delivering fuel being able to work longer hours.
TEMA is urging drivers to wait to fill up the tank until it is close to empty. It says if drivers fill up too early, there could be issues in the availability of gasoline.
“Just give it some time for fuel to go back into that convenience store,” said Flener.
