KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A Knoxville mom was arrested for DUI Wednesday morning after police say she drove through a school zone with children in her car while she was intoxicated.

Mary Emmett, 34, is charged with one count of DUI. The Knoxville Police Department says more charges are possible as the investigation continues.

A witness called 911 around 8:15 a.m. to say she saw a driver at McDonald’s on Broadway in Fountain City who appeared to be driving while intoxicated. The witness also saw children in the vehicle and followed the car to give the direction of travel to dispatchers.

Emmett’s car went through the school zone of Gresham Middle School while children were arriving for school. She stopped and a 12-year-old got out and went into school. Officers were able to stop the vehicle as she pulled out of the school.

Emmett was given a field sobriety test and immediately taken into custody. Officers played games with her 3-year-old child until other family members could arrive.
