NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Tennessee Titans linebacker, Avery Williamson surprised everyone by actually wearing his cleats during the game against the Vikings Sunday after Tweeting that he would auction them off instead.
Williamson had custom football cleats made to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The shoes are star-spangled and emblazoned with “Never Forget” and “9-11-01.”
Williamson retweeted media reports saying he had hoped to wear the shoes at Sunday’s Titans game on September 11 against the Minnesota Vikings but was told the shoes violated the NFL’s uniform policy.
Williamson announced on Twitter that he would instead auction the cleats online, with the proceeds to be donated to Warrior Wishes.
The charity honors military members and Gold Star families.
According to The Tennessean, several Police Stations in New York and New Jersey vowed to pay Williamson’s fine that will be charged by the NFL for the dress code violation.
