Battle at Bristol trophy takes more than 300 hours to complete

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Not only are bragging rights on the line at the Battle at Bristol, an impressive piece of hardware is also up for grabs.

A one-of-a-kind, custom designed trophy will call either Knoxville or Blacksburg home and it has some impressive stats of its own. It weighs in as one of the heaviest sports trophies ever made, taking more than 300 hours of production to complete.

The production time included 20 hours of polishing the football portion of the trophy alone. Artist Jody Nilsen entered the contest to design the trophy for the battle in the hopes that it would be something the players were playing for.

“We should make one that looks like a really good trophy combing the stadium, combing the track something that was memorable,” said Nilsen. “You know something that commemorates the arena, so colossal.”

Nilsen’s inspiration came from a Super Bowl poster she had hanging on her wall as a child but seeing her design transformed into the Battle at Bristol hardware was something else. “What they did, it was breathtaking,” she said. She doesn’t have a favorite to win this year’s trophy, she’s just glad to be a part of it.

“I thought it was such a great thing. It’s really only the association I’ll have with sports, I admire, and I’ll never have a trophy except for my name attached to this one,” said Nilsen.
