KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Zoo Knoxville welcomed a new giraffe to its herd Saturday morning.
The one-year-old female giraffe named Francis arrived from the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota off the recommendation of the Giraffe Species Survival Plan (SSP).
The SSP manages the social placement and breeding of all giraffes in accredited zoos.
Francis will be placed alongside two other female giraffes as well as a male giraffe who will serve as a possible mate. She will be introduced to her new herd over the next two days and will most likely make her public debut on Tuesday.
Francis stands approximately 10-feet tall and weighs nearly 750 pounds. Zoo trainers say her smaller stature will make it easy for visitors to spot her.
