Suspect shot by Scott County officer, TBI investigating

Arthur Earnest Letner

HELENWOOD (WATE) – A suspect is in the hospital after he was shot by an officer in Scott County.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said Arthur Earnest Letner, 49, was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office said Letner was shot Monday at around 5:00 p.m. when four officers attempted to serve warrants at a home on Letner Road in Helenwood.

“I saw three detective cars go in, so we knew something drastic was going on,” said a neighbor.

Investigators said Letner was hiding in a bathroom. As deputies approached the home, they said Letner came out of the bathroom holding what looked like a knife and charged.

The sheriff’s office said a deputy fired his or her weapon shooting Letner in the hand.

“They took him in yesterday, they won’t let him loose. He’s gone,” added the neighbor.

The deputy was placed on administrative leave, according to Scott County Sheriff’s Office, with pay while TBI investigates.

Many neighbors say there’s a sense of relief knowing Letner has been arrested.

“He’s not going to be down there causing problems but I still feel sorry for him.”

Letner’s criminal history includes false imprisonment, evading arrest and aggravated assault.
