NEWPORT (WATE) – A man in Cocke County was charged with murder after a stand-off with law enforcement overnight.
Alfred Terry Brooks, 45, was charged with first degree murder and manufacturing marijuana. Cocke County Sheriff’s Office said they received a confession from Brooks after he was taken into custody.
Cocke County Sheriff’s Office said they were contacted by a neighbor who said she received a call from Brooks saying he had shot and killed his girlfriend. The woman told police that she sent her son to check the property and found the woman dead and Brooks angry and making threats.
Deputies arrived at the home, located at 197 Upper Bison, at 10:36 p..m. Officer said they received information that Brooks was armed with several guns and said he was going to kill himself and planned on shooting law enforcement officers when they approached his home.
Because of rugged terrain and poor road conditions, Sheriff Armando Fontes said there was no safe way to approach the home. They reached out to Morristown Police Department for assistance and asked for help from their SWAT team.
Sheriff Fontes said they were able to calm Brooks down and arrange for a peaceful surrender. At 2:08 a.m. he said Brooks was taken into custody and officers located the victim with a gun shot wound to the face.
Officers said they are working to notify family. Investigators said they found what they believe is the murder weapon, along with several other guns on the property and several flower pots containing marijuana plants.
Brooks is being held without bond in the Cocke County Jail, according to Sheriff Fontes.
