Strong winds blow metal awning off Knoxville thrift store

An awning was blown off Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries' store off of Western Avenue in Knoxville.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Strong winds blew a metal awning off a Knoxville thrift store Tuesday afternoon, but no injuries were reported.

Video from the scene shows the awning in the parking lot in front of KARM Store, 3935 Western Avenue, on top of two parked cars. Knoxville Fire Department crews had roped off the area.

“We just saw a little rain and we heard a little ‘pop,’ and we looked out and saw the roof had fallen. There was two cars sitting there. It had fell on top of them,” said Janice Thigpen, who owns one of the two cars.

Thigpen said she was told the building’s management company is working to send a crane to remove the awning.

Knox County was under a severe thunderstorm warning at the time. WATE 6 On Your Side Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Matt Hinkin said wind speeds were up to 60 mph at the time.
