Knoxville Fire Department shares summer safety tips

KFD says to keep vegetation away from fire hydrants, power lines

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Longer hours of sunlight in summer can cause vegetation to grow quickly, and the Knoxville Fire Department says lack of attention to a normally manicured property could cause problems.

Capt. D.J. Corcoran says if a fire hydrant is on your property, make sure to keep weeds or bushes from blocking access or sight. Firefighters look for them in an emergency situation. You should never paint or deface a fire hydrant, as the color coding is important to firefighters.

Make sure your numerical address is clear of vegetation and visible from the street, whether it’s on the front of your house or on the mailbox.

Keep incoming electrical lines from the utility pole to your home clear of tree branches. High winds can cause branches to fall across the lines and cause a fire.
