LENOIR CITY (WATE) – Tennessee Highway Department said drugs may have been a factor in a fatal accident that closed Interstate 75 lanes for several hours Tuesday.
According to the accident report a Nissan Sentra with passengers from Pell City, Alabama left the road at around 11:59 a.m. and rolled over in the median of I-75 near mile marker 80. Troopers said the two passengers in the back of the car, who were not wearing seat belts, were ejected from the vehicle.
Jennifer M. Torbert, 41, was killed and Meghan Torbert, 19, was injured. The driver of the car, Jerry P. Newton, 66, and a 7-year-old that was in the front passenger seat were also injured.
THP said Newton may have had drugs in his system. A test was ordered and THP said criminal charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Officers said seat belts could have made the difference in the accident.
