KNOXVILLE (WATE) – One person is dead after an argument outside of a South Knoxville apartment.
Knoxville Police Department said Tommy Young, 74, of Knoxville was shot and killed. A second man was stabbed in the fight, treated and released into the custody of officers.
Jeffrey Mitchell, 32, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Officers said they responded to an incident concerning a shooting and stabbing at Oak Crest Apartments at 9:36 p.m. Sunday. After arriving to the apartments on Morning Crest Way, police found Young with a gunshot wound and a man with stab wounds.
Investigators believe the men had an argument over a parking space.
“I was getting ready to go to bed around 9:30 and heard the commotion,” described Melodie Jones who lives in one of the apartments right by the scene.
The men were taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center, where Young was pronounced dead. The man with stab wounds is recovering from non-life threatening injuries.
“It’s crazy. Over a parking spot, it’s crazy,” Jones said.
Neighbors say the apartment complex does not have assigned parking, and so Mitchell had painted his apartment number on one of the spots and considered it his. The fight began when one of Young’s guests parked in the spot Mitchell considered his.
Police said Mitchell is being held at Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility on a $25,000 bond. Records show he is a felon with a criminal history going back to 2002. Additional charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation.
A manager with the apartment complex says they plan to repave the parking lot and give everyone their own assigned parking spot.
