Lightning causes fire, destroys house in Knox County

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A house was destroyed in a fire Friday morning in North Knox County.

According to the homeowners, lightening struck the house around 7 p.m. in Corryton on 7430 Wood Road near Thompson School Road. The homeowners smelled smoke, however, they did not see flames. The house’s power went out overnight.

The fire department says the detectors went off at 6 a.m. The homeowners noticed a fire on the roof and tried to control it themselves. However, they were not able to and escaped the house.

When Rural Metro and firefighters reported to the scene the house was fully engulfed. . A water hydrant near a church was used to help control the flames, as well as two tanker trucks.

The homeowners are staying with family at this time.
