One woman killed and sister injured after tree fell in West Knoxville

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A woman was killed and her sister was sent to the hospital, when a tree fell Friday night in West Knoxville during the round of severe thunderstorms that moved through the area.

The homeowner, Ruthie Carey, was pronounced dead on the scene and her sister, Kathy Reddy, visiting from Florida is listed as stable condition at UT Medical Center.

The incident was reported around 6:45 p.m. on Sherwood Drive. When officers arrived, they found the female homeowner and a visiting relative had both been injured from a tree that had fallen. The homeowner was pronounced dead at the scene. The other woman was taken to UT Medical Center for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

Both women were outside the home when the tree fell.
