Hawkins County man charged with attempted murder in July 4 shooting

MOORESBURG (WATE) – A Hawkins County man is charged with attempted murder after a Fourth of July shooting in Mooresburg.

Roger Miller also faces two counts of felony reckless endangerment. The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to a home on Carpenter Farm Drive around 9:14 p.m. Monday night. They found Robert Bevins, 50, at a nearby home with a gunshot wound to his left arm.

Bevins said he was supposed to drive Betty Miller and a four-year-old child to a fireworks show, but while he was there, an argument broke out and Roger Miller pulled out a shotgun. Deputies say Bevins was unarmed and had the child on his lap.

Roger Miller fired one shot, which hit Bevins as he sat in his truck. Deputies say Bevins was shielding the child and was in the process of handing the child over to Betty Miller. Neither she nor the child were hurt.

Bevins was taken to a hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
