KNOXVILLE (WATE) – With warm temperatures, many people are heading to the pool in East Tennessee. However, only 56-percent of Americans can perform the five core skills of swimming, according to the American Red Cross.
USA Swimming says 70-percent of African-American and 60-percent of Hispanic/Latino children can not swim. If a parent does not know how to swim, there is only a 13-percent chance that a child in the same household will learn.
WATE 6 On Your Side’s Tearsa Smith decided to take swimming lessons with her children at the Cansler Family YMCA. According to the organization, the YMCA is the leading swim lesson provider in the world. Anyone can take lessons at the organization’s many locations. The YMCA does not turn anyone away based on their inability to pay.
Private lessons are offered all year. Students can take four 30-minute lessons with a teacher. The cost for private lessons is $70 for members and $110 for program members. Buddy private lessons are also available. The lessons are for two students with similar swimming ability. The cost for buddy private lessons are $60 per members or $85 per program members.
YMCA offers group lessons for preschool and youth in June and July. There are lessons for beginners, intermediate and advanced. Preschool lessons are 30-minutes and available for children ages 3 to 5. Lessons for youth ages 6 to 13 are 45 minutes. The cost for eight group lessons are $55 for members and $75 for program members.
