UT provides guidelines for faculty on campus carry law

The University of Tennessee

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – University of Tennessee full-time employees with a handgun permit will be allowed to carry a concealed weapon on campus starting July 1.

Public Chapter 1061 was passed in May without Governor Bill Haslam’s signature.

Employees’ guns must be concealed at all times. The bill requires staff to inform campus law enforcement of their guns.

Students are not allowed to carried concealed weapons, including full-time employees who are enrolled at UT.

UT will begin to register full-time employees who wanted to carry their guns Monday morning. Employees must go to the UTPD office to fill out paperwork. Applicants are asked to bring a faculty/staff ID, a valid Tennessee driver’s license and a valid Tennessee handgun permit.

The university sent an email to students, faculty and staff explaining the guidelines.

Employees are not allowed to bring guns into meetings about tenure and employee discipline, and sport venues or auditoriums during a university-sponsored events. Also, concealed handguns are not allowed in hospitals, and medical and mental health offices, including: Student Health Center, Veterinary Medical, Early Learning Center and speech and hearing clinics.

In a survey that allowed University of Tennessee employees to speak anonymously, there were a handful of comments in favor of the law. One said “I would feel more comfortable being able to have a concealed weapon on campus.”

However, a vast majority of the comments in the survey are against the change. One faculty member wrote, “the only reason to be armed on campus would be able to neutralize an active shooter. That requires the kind of training that sworn police officers have and that most carry-permit holders do not.”
