RUTLEDGE (WATE) – A Grainger County man was sent to the hospital Monday night after a domestic argument led to him being shot in the arm by his own son.
The Grainger County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to a home on Lester Whitt Road around 6:30 p.m. where they found Tony Owens, 47, with a gunshot wound in his right arm. Witnesses said he and his wife Donna Owens, 49, had been having a loud argument on the porch when Donna Owens screamed something about a gun.
Their son Joey Owens, 24, went to check on his mother and saw his father Tony pull a pistol from his right side. Joey Owens retrieved a rifle and fired it as Tony Owens brought the pistol toward him, hitting his father in the arm.
Tony Owens was taken to UT Medical Center by helicopter. Investigators say Donna and Joey Owens were in the process of leaving for the evening due to feeling afraid and threatened by Tony Owens for several days. They say Tony Owens was also armed with a knife.
The investigation is ongoing. There is no word yet on charges.
