KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A 4-year-old girl has died and her 8-year-old sister has serious injuries after a single-vehicle crash Monday evening near Knoxville Center Mall. Their father now faces several charges, including DUI.
Police initially responded to a sick person call at Millertown Pike over I-640, but when they got there, they realized it was a car crash.
Investigators say Donald E. Taylor, 40, drove a 1998 Chevrolet Van off the road and struck a pole in the 4900 block of Millertown Pike. Emergency responders had to stop the vehicle at I-640.
The suspect’s daughters, Aleeah Taylor, 4, and Natalie Taylor, 8, were found with life threatening injuries. Aleeah Taylor died Tuesday at UT Medical Center. Her sister is still listed in critical condition.
On Tuesday, neighbors defended Taylor and said his actions seemed out of character.
“You wouldn’t think that he would risk drinking and driving with those kids because he was always with his kids and had them playing with them and took well care of them,” Thomas Phelps, a neighbor said.
The report claims Donald Taylor told investigators he had a six-pack of beer before driving.
Donald Taylor was arrested and faces charges for DUI, aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without insurance. Additional charges are now pending following his daughter’s death.
