(WFLA) — A new study shows some detergent pods are proving to be more dangerous to children than others. According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, poison control centers received more than 62,000 calls about kids eating the pods in 2013 and 2014.

The study shows liquid laundry detergent packets are causing the most severe injuries in young children, especially for those under the age of six. But dish detergent pods are also dangerous. Ingesting the chemicals can cause severe burns, lung damage, and more.

“We’ve seen coma, we’ve seen seizures, we even had two deaths due to exposure to these laundry detergent packets over the last two years,” said Dr. Gary Smith, Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Many parents view the pods as a convenient way to do laundry or dishes, but young kids often view the pods as bright and colorful toys or candy.

Some manufacturers are using warning labels and changing packaging.

Safety experts want parents to switch to traditional laundry and dish detergents while kids are young.
