KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A loaded firearm was discovered at a McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) checkpoint by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Monday.
Investigators say the .38 caliber Smith & Wesson gun was found in a passenger’s carry-on bag at 10 a.m.
Airport police were alerted and took a hold of the bag.
Passengers are able to have firearms in checked baggage, however they must be unloaded, be in the correct case and not be in a carry-on bag.
“Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the checkpoint,” said Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson. “Our advice is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items.”
This is the third time this year a firearm was found at a TYS checkpoint. Eighteen firearms were found in 2015. Seventy-three firearms were found at checkpoints last week across the county.
The passenger was charged. Passengers with firearms can face civil penalties from the TSA.
