KNOXVILLE (WATE) — The Tennessee Vols wont be playing in the NCAA tournament, but a few former Vols will.
On Thursday 1-seed Virginia will take on 16-seed Hampton. Former Vol Darius Thompson will be on the floor for the Virginia Cavaliers while Quinton Chievous will be on the floor for the Hampton Pirates.
“As soon as we found out we were playing each other, I called him right away,” said Thompson. “It’s weird” said the Virginia guard reflecting on his time at Tennessee with Chievous. “He’s basically my big brother figure, and now I’m going against him. It’s a crazy feeling.”
Thompson appeared in 37 games for the Vols during his freshman season and announced he would transfer after Cuonzo Martin left the program.
Martin’s Cal team is currently a 4-seed in the tournament.
“It’s cool how we got to Tennessee, and now we’re actually playing against each other” said Chievous who averages 17 points per game for Hampton.
Virginia and Hampton will play Thursday afternoon, but it’s not likely to be much of a contest. The Cavaliers are heavy favorites, and no 1-seed has ever lost to a 16-seed.
Former Vol Wes Washpun is also playing in the NCAA tournament. Washpun plays for the University of Northern Iowa which is an 11-seed and will face 6-seed Texas.
