Truck crashes into Tennessee Walmart, 4 injured

Driver claims he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) – A truck drove through the entrance of a Walmart in Kingsport on Tuesday.

According to Kingsport Police Department Spokesman Tom Patton, a full-size Dodge truck driven by  Robert L. Waterman,79, went through the entrance of around 6:45 p.m.

Waterman told police he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake as he was backing up from a parking space.

Police say a family of four including a father, mother and two small children (18 months and 6-months-old) were hit by the truck. The family was exiting the store. They were transported to Holston Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Also, Waterman was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

The truck was able to slip between two of the barricade poles.

The crash is still under investigation at this time.
