KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A record number of people showed up at the polls this year to cast their ballots early ahead of the March 1 primary.
Secretary of State Tre Hargett and Coordinator of Elections Mark Goins held a news conference about the record shattering numbers Wednesday afternoon.

A total of 385,653 early votes were cast in Tennessee, breaking the previous record of 329,154 in 2008, the most recent open presidential primary for both parties in Tennessee.
In Knox County alone, 36.816 people voted early or absentee, with 10,369 on the last day. Early voting ran from February 10 through Tuesday.
